No legal requirements in Texas require boat owners to obtain insurance. However, if you plan on financing or leasing your boat, you may find that your lender requires you to obtain insurance. Additionally, marinas may require you to show proof of insurance.

- Navigational area- It is essential that you know exactly where you are covered while in the water. Most of the time, this policy covers up to 75 miles from the U.S. coastline into inland or Canadian coastal waters.
- Agreed value coverage- Just like vehicles, boats depreciate as well. This coverage will protect you if your boat is a complete loss. You will receive the actual cash value that you insured it for.
- Liability- This will provide coverage for other boat owners and boaters if you cause an accident while in the water. This policy will pay for the costs to repair or replace the other boater’s insurance.
- Medical payments- This will cover the cost of medical expenses following a boating accident for both you and your passengers, no matter who is at fault.
- Physical damage- This will cover your repair or replacement expenses for your motor or watercraft if anything attached to it permanently becomes damaged or stolen.
- Fuel spill liability- If your boat becomes seriously damaged or sinks, it could dump fuel or oil into the water. You will be required legally to clean it up.
